Bathroom reading is not safe

in

A man walks in a little bookstore and buys sophisticated books that deal with philosophical and scientific topics. At the counter, the young clerk comments:
- A little light reading huh.
- Yeah, just some bathroom reading, replies the man matter of factly, trying to be funny in the shortest sentence.
- Wow, you must be full of shit then!

You know you're an infojunkie if...

10. The main intellectual activity of your childhood consisted of making lists, from airplane models to French words of Arabic origin.
9. Your parents took you in their Trivial Pursuit team, encouraging you to memorize all the cards.
8. Your high school teachers gave you books that you keep rediscovering every decade.
7. Now that you've grown up, your innocent list-making has turned into an addiction for collections: music, books, films, whatever can be acquired into a hierarchy of categories.
6. With the advent of the Internet, your addiction has taken a turn for the worse. You've now become a multimedia pirate but you're spending unreasonable amounts of money on bandwidth and disk space.

International ads for the Arab region

Some sites try to serve me targeted ads based on my geographical location. Because I live in the Middle East, most ads I get on American sites are the two reproduced below. For non-Arabic speakers, the campaign encourages people to apply for a working visa to the US.

On easy analogies

If religion is the opium of the masses, then communism is their heroin, capitalism their speed, and science their LSD!

Humour is malignant?

in

We were talking about how humour necessarily includes a dose of malignancy. But that's not quite it: I think rather that humour's key ingredient is self-deprecation, where the audience identifies with the butt of the joke. After all, humour's purpose is the ability to distance oneself from a tragic situation, an important problem-solving skill.
